Reefton, the Town of Light

Reefton, the only inland town in the West Coast, is nestled in the Inangahua River valley between the rugged and spectacular Victoria and Paparoa Ranges. It is centrally located at a hub of state highway access into the Coast, north to Murchison, Nelson and Blenheim, east to Christchurch, and south to Greymouth.

Reefton has always been a special place from the early heady days of the goldrush in the late 1860's. Today, the town attracts many visitors who come to share in its rich history, with over 60,000 people coming into the Reefton Visitor Centre annually.

Reefton has a population of just over 1000 and a vibrant community spirit. Many of Reefton’s key buildings date from the 1870s such as the School of Mines, Oddfellows Hall, the Reefton Courthouse, St Stephens Church, Catholic Church, the railway station and engine shed. A wander down Broadway will reveal a number of shops from this era, still servicing the town 130 years on.

Reefton offers many recreation and sporting amenities including a delightful 12 hole golf course in a country setting, a heated indoor swimming pool that provides almost year round swimming, squash courts, indoor netball and basketball court, tennis courts and children’s play parks. Reefton has two well-equipped schools - Reefton Area School and Sacred Heart (Catholic integrated).

The Reefton Racecourse provides a great venue for two annual race meetings - the Reefton Gallops and the Reefton Trots, both held over the summer period. The Inangahua Agricultural & Pastoral Show and the Reefton Rodeo are popular events.

Outdoor activities abound with old gold mining sites to explore, great 4WD and mountain biking tracks, Victoria Conservation Park, and tramping through virgin native bush. The whole area offers excellent trout fishing and the possibility of being the only angler on the river. The fishing season is from October to May with very little wind, ideal for fly-fishing.
