Freehold Sawmilling Business For Sale
Arundel, South Canterbury, New Zealand

Arundel Lumber sawmilling business in South Canterbury is for private sale

Sawmillers and Timber Merchants since 1951

New Zealand grows about 35 % of the world’s radiata pine production. Since its introduction in the 19th century, this fast growing and versatile tree has become a common feature of the country's landscape.

In Canterbury, Pinus radiata is widely grown as planted production forests and as farm forestry. Wood supply forecasts show that Canterbury forests are presently yielding 1.2 million cubic metres of logs (excluding bark) and this annual figure will rise to 1.5 million cubic metres of logs within 20 years.

Arundel Lumber Company Ltd is a substantial timber mill located at Arundel (about 15 km north of Geraldine) and central to the major production forests in South Canterbury.

Charles Gould established Arundel Lumber in 1951 to mill locally grown Pinus radiata. The sawmill is now run by Charles’s two sons, John and Edward and it has become a local Geraldine landmark employing 13 staff.

Over the years, Arundel Lumber has developed a steady market for the sawmilling and processing of Pinus radiata timber products:

  • Sawn timber of all sizes and grades
  • Planed timber of all sizes and grades
  • Kiln-dried timber
  • Treated timber
  • Finger jointed timber

The business is a Woodmark Licensee. Woodmark (http://www.nztpc.co.nz/woodmarkLicensees.php) is New Zealand’s only independent national quality assurance brand for timber treatment. The business is also licensed to use the Verified Timber trademark.

John and Edward now wish to retire from business life and they have put their sawmilling business on to the market. Arundel Lumber is an automated sawmill with well-maintained equipment and a diversified product mix. At present, the sawmill produces around 30 cubic metres of sawn timber per day, but production could be increased 50% by adding another shift.

While a background in sawmilling would be an advantage, Arundel Lumber would ideally suit a new owner with management skills and a strong interest in local sales and marketing. There are also export opportunities available to a new owner with drive and enthusiasm.
