Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo is a small alpine village in the Mackenzie Basin on State Highway 8, the main central route from Christchurch to Queenstown. Lake Tekapo is 225 km (3 hours) from Christchurch, 258 km from Queenstown (3.5 hours), 104 km from Timaru (1 hour) and 100 km (1 hour) from Mt Cook.

The alpine and lake views and wide open landscapes around Lake Tekapo make for some of the most stunning views in New Zealand and are featured in many tourist publications. The famous turquoise colour of Lake Tekapo is caused by sunlight reflecting from the glacial rock flour that is suspended in the water. The Church of the Good Shepherd sitting on the shore of Lake Tekapo with the window behind the altar looking up the lake is one of the most photographed church in New Zealand.

The Observatory on top of Mt John (just outside Lake Tekapo township) commands a 360 degree panoramic views over the Basin and is operated by the University of Canterbury. The Lake Tekapo night sky is the darkest and clearest sky in the country. Earth & Sky run Stargazing & Day Tours to view and explore features of the majestic Southern Sky.

The area offers numerous walking tracks of varying lengths and difficulty and offers visitors an opportunity to enjoy the wide-open spaces and magnificent scenery of the region. The Winter Park that is presently being constructed will bring another dimension to Lake Tekapo in the winter. This new attraction will offer an artificial ice rink along with hot pools and a toboggan park. It will complement the local ski fields at Round Hill and Mt Dobson and will increase visitor numbers to Lake Tekapo in the winter period.

Lake Tekapo is also offers excellent lake, river and stream fishing for brown and rainbow trout.
