Art Deco Napier

With a Mediterranean climate and nestled idyllically on a superb coastal position, Napier is the heart of one of the country’s premier wine-producing regions - the Hawkes Bay.

Napier and neighbouring towns were devastated by a major earthquake and fire in 1931. The city was rebuilt in a period regarded as the peak of the Art Deco era. Today, Napier is unique with buildings in all of the main Art Deco styles of the 1930s - Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission, and above all Art Deco. Visitors come from near and far to enjoy Art Deco Shopping, Art Deco walks, and Art Deco Weekends that are offered by both Napier and nearby Hastings.

Marine Parade is another of Napier's highlights with its large Norfolk pines, pebble beach, statues, gardens and amusements. Other features include Marineland - New Zealand’s only marine zoo and wildlife centre - and the National Aquarium of New Zealand.

Napier is also the northern gateway to the rich and diverse Hawke's Bay with its emphasis on agriculture, horticulture and outstanding wines. Hawke's Bay is one of New Zealand's warmest regions with summer temperatures (November-April) ranging from 20 to 35 degrees C and mild winters (June-September) averaging 15 degrees C. Visitors come for a day, and they stay on to explore the region and its vineyards and Tourist Trails.
