Tuatapere and Western Southland

Tuatapere has all the services of a prosperous rural town including, pubs (2), Country Club, Museum and Art Galleries, retail shops, doctors, chemist, Maternity Hospital, churches, service stations, golf course, net ball and rugby Clubs, covered swimming pool, and lots more. The town has a school that teaches Year 1 to Year 13 pupils.

The economy of this area of Southland is based on dairy and sheep farming, sawmilling, shearing, and coal fields. There is a network of similar rural towns - Riverton, Otautau, Ohai, Nightcaps - all with colourful histories and all offering great hospitality. The A & P Show and Sports Day at Tuatapere on New Year's day is a big event for the whole of western Southland.
