Many of the truck drivers who stay in the Motels have brought stock to Alliance Group Pukeuri, the enormous meat processing plant just outside Oamaru. The Pukeuri plant is North Otago's largest employer with up to 1000 people at the peak of the season. Many workers come from the local Waitaki District and the plant has important financial benefits to businesses like North Otago Hotel & Motels.

North Otago Hotel & Motels is also handy to Pukeuri Junction, the intersection between SH 1 and SH 83. Traffic from Dunedin and Timaru turn at the Junction to go inland on SH 83 up the Waitaki Valley to Mt Cook and the Mackenzie Basin. SH 83 also leads to Wanaka and Central Otago. The Motel Units at North Otago Hotel & Motels are popular with tourist and families travelling through this picturesque part of the South Island.

Oamaru and North Otago

Oamaru is situated on the East Coast of the South Island in North Otago. Oamaru has largest number of heritage buildings in New Zealand. Many of the unique Victorian buildings were built between 1870 and 1890 from the creamy white granular limestone that underlies much of the are. These buildings reflect the wealth of a prosperous colonial New Zealand town and much of the original architecture and townscape has been restored as a tourist attraction.

Oamaru has regular Sunday markets and a novel way to travel around is on the vintage steam train. Other popular activities include fishing, jet boating, skiing. There are three ski fields within 2.5 hours drive of Oamaru and five accessible golf courses.

Popular annual events in Oamaru include the Victorian Heritage Celebration Week (held in November) and the Oamaru Stone Carving and Whitestone Waitaki Food and Wine Festival (held in Oamaru Gardens in February).

Oamaru is also home to a Blue Penguin Colony and to a Colony of the rare yellow-eyed penguin. There is outstanding duck and Canada geese hunting in the area once the fishing season ends in May. Quail and chukor are also available in season while rabbits, hares, pigs, deer and wallabies can be shot year round.

This area of North Otago has several large construction projects including the Meridian Energy tunnel on the Waitaki and a new cement works at Weston. These projects have brought workers, new families, and more trucks to the region.
