Dargaville

Dargaville is situated on the west coast of Northland, just 2.5 hours north of Auckland and 45 minutes from Whangarei. Aratapu Tavern is located between Dargaville and Te Kopuru (11 km from Dargaville) on the main road south to the historic Pouto Peninsula.

Dargaville is part of the Twin Coast Discovery Highway that brings tourists to the "winterless north" to visit the giant kauri tree "Tane Mahuta" in the Waipoua Forest. Average daytime temperatures are around 12 to 15 Centigrade for winter and between 22 and 28 Centigrade for summer.

Beef and dairy are the area’s chief pastoral industry. The area around Dargaville is the most important region in New Zealand for cultivating kumara (sweet potato) and so Dargaville is known by many locals as the Kumara Capital of New Zealand. Forestry plantings, onions, squash, pumpkin, watermelon are also features of the area.

Dargaville has one of the longest unbroken stretches of sand beach in New Zealand that is largely drivable from one end to the other. Around 150 shipwrecks are recorded on local beaches and the Dargaville Museum has many maritime displays.

Other interesting places to visit include Kauri wood-turners, artists, art galleries and weaving studios. Adventure junkies can explore the area via a 6WD Adventure Bus, Quad bikes, horse treks, and high-speed river boats. The sea and Kaipara Harbour are renowned for great snapper fishing.
