It is known as the aprés ski capital of the North Island , the Carrot Capital of New Zealand, a forestry centre, a farming centre, and home to around 1500 people. It is a pleasant country town in summer - attractive as a base for numerous outdoor activities - and a lively snow sports centre in winter.
Due to Ruapehu’s central location, skiers and snowboarders literally flock to the town through the winter to take advantage of New Zealand ’s two biggest ski areas, now run by one company, Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL). Mt Ruapehu offers over 700 hectares of patrolled skiable terrain on 50 groomed trails, with almost the same area off-trail. Turoa provides the only lift access to a glacier in New Zealand – to the awesome Mangaehuehu Glacier. Access on the Turoa and Whakapapa skifield roads (both sealed all the way) is toll-free and both have ample free car parking, and the company now offers “seamless” lift passes – you can ski either side of Ruapehu on the same ticket. Because Turoa faces south-west it holds its snow well and in good condition, providing drier snow in winter and great spring skiing right through October and usually into November. The field is a natural terrain park for skiers and snowboarders. It has wide open slopes for cruising, as well as tricky chutes and steeps for advanced skiers. Down below, the Alpine Meadow, with full snowmaking, provides a sheltered haven for the first timers. As if the natural terrain was not enough, RAL creates an impressive snowboarding terrain park at the top of the Giant Chairlift as well. For just 20 minutes extra travelling time by car, Ohakune visitors can slide on Whakapapa Ski Field area, which offers more than 30 groomed trails as well as its steep chutes, couloirs and superb off-piste exciting skiing. Whakapapa is NZ’s largest ski area, with 675 metres of vertical drop: 23 lifts – 1 express quad chair, 1 quad chair, 4 double chairs, 4 T-bars, 4 platter lifts, 7 learner tows. Ohakune is the place to be after a day’s skiing or sliding on Mt Ruapehu, with numerous bars, restaurants and cafés, as well as a huge range of accommodation where you can rest up afterwards, in readiness for the next day on the slopes. Thanks to the support of several thousand customers who brought Life Passes last year Ruapehu Alpine Lifts has been able to begin Phase 1 of its long term development plan. Turoa’s current summer development program is the single largest Ski Area upgrade in NZ's history! By the time Winter 2007 rolls around Turoa will have a new 6 seater detachable chairlift, a new cafe and retail complex and a massive increase in snowmaking capacity. THIS DEVELOPEMENT AT TUROA IS NOW COMPLETED AND ALL UP AND RUNNING AND DRAGGING IN THE VISITORS BY THE 1000,s WITH RECORD VISITORS TO TUROA Phase 2 of the developments will see the 1.05km long Valley Express being constructed at Whakapapa Ski Area. The final phase of the Mt Ruapehu developments will also take place at Whakapapa when the Rockgarden Chairlift will be replaced by the high speed Tennants Valley Express. As you can imagine the team here at Mt Ruapehu are extremely excited about these developments which will match some of the best terrain in NZ with some of the latest and greatest facilities.
