Nelson, New Zealand

Rare opportunity to obtain water space and grow mussels

Aquaculture in New Zealand is currently a $300 million industry based largely around the farming of mussels in the Marlborough Sounds.

With over 5,000 km of indented coastline, New Zealand has the ideal environment for aquaculture and the farming of New Zealand Greenshell™ mussels. The whole aquaculture sector is set to dramatically expand, including the present mussel industry, and new species and products are being sought to further use the water space. Returns from the industry are expected to top $1 billion by 2025.

New Zealand Greenshell™ mussels

The New Zealand Greenshell™ mussel is native to New Zealand. It is unique in that it grows nowhere else on Earth.

Greenshell mussels are native to New Zealand waters

New Zealand Greenshell™ mussels provide a wealth of nutritional benefits including:

  • low in fat and a great source of protein, iron and essential fatty acids
  • rich in many vitamins (especially the B complex group)
  • rich in a broad range of minerals and trace elements

Mussels can be sold in many different product forms including:

  • Frozen (about 80% of the harvest) - frozen half-shell, frozen whole shell, frozen meat
  • Fresh live - New Zealand and export consumption
  • Processed - vacuum packed, in sauces and marinades, smoked, and more

Mussel Farming

A mussel farm consists of a series of buoys held together by long lines that are anchored to the seafloor at each end. A series of weighted ropes, on which the mussels are grown, hang down from these lines. Farmed mussels grow to around 10-15 cm long and are usually harvested after 14 to 18 months. When they reach a desired size, the rope is lifted and the mussels are stripped from it. Harvested mussels are sold as a fresh shellfish to local and export markets, or are processed into value-added products.

Greenshell™ mussel farming is sustainable because:

  • Nothing is added to the water
  • No chemicals or antibiotics are used
  • The ecological effects are limited and often positive
  • Mussels effectively clean the water they filter feed from
  • The industry runs its own world first Environmental Management System
  • The industry meets a number of environmental monitoring requirements in order to farm in coastal water

There are about 2,153 hectares of marine farms in the Marlborough Sounds producing 50,000 greenweight tons of mussels annually (see http://www.nzmfa.co.nz for more information).

Aquaculture Sector

Because of the Aquaculture Law Reform Act of January 2005, marine farming can now only occur in an Aquaculture Management Area (AMA) as identified by Regional Councils. Consequently, allocations of new water space for mussel farming are being delayed by up to 10 years.

The Marlborough Sounds, Havelock and Picton

The Marlborough Sounds is a vast maze of deep channels, sheltered waterways and secluded bays, embraced by verdant bush-clad hills. Queen Charlotte and Pelorus Sounds are the principal waterways. Holiday houses and even permanent homes are dotted throughout the hidden bays and coves, as well as a number of luxury resorts and lodges that are only accessible by sea.

The picturesque fishing port of Havelock is located at the head of Pelorus Sound. The town is famous as the place where Lord Rutherford spent much of his teenage years. Havelock is a popular tourist town with many original colonial buildings that now house boutique art and craft galleries, cafés and restaurants. Havelock is better known as the principal base for mussel farming in the Sounds.

Queen Charlotte Drive, the scenic road that starts at Havelock and ends at Picton, is one of New Zealand's most delightful drives. The road winds around bush-fringed coastline, past sheltered inlets and bays, alongside flat farmland and through the fertile valleys that once formed the upper reaches of the Sounds.

Picton is located at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound and the picturesque port is the terminal for the inter-islander ferries that cross Cook Straight to link the North and South Islands.
