Arable farms around Sheffield with views to the Southern Alps

Sheffield is about 40 minutes west of Christchurch on the edge of the Canterbury Plains. The township is located near the key traffic junction between State Highway 73 (the main road over the Southern Alps to the West Coast) and the Inland Scenic Route (State Highway 72) that runs north-south through Canterbury.

There has been a Hotel at Sheffield since 1882. Today, the Sheffield Hotel provides hospitality and accommodation services for the local township and the surrounding farming area. It is popular with Groups wanting a weekend venue and with local agricultural and forestry contractors wanting lodgings for their staff. The Hotel is also a popular stopping place for those playing the 18-hole Waimakariri Golf Club, just 5 minutes away.

The Hotel attracts a steady stream of customers from passing traffic on SH 72 and 73 and from tourists who are exploring the area. The Craigieburn Range and Arthur's Pass National Park attract hikers in summer and skiers in winter while the Waimakariri River offers great fishing and exciting jet boating year round. The Porters Heights Skifield off SH 73 is the closest skifield to Christchurch. Winter sports enthusiasts from Christchurch also travel though Sheffield on their way down SH 72 to the Mt Hutt skifield. Other major events in and around Sheffield include the Speights Coast to Coast at the Waimakariri Gorge and the launching of hot air balloons.

Sheffield and the Selwyn District

The townships of Sheffield and Waddington, located just one kilometre apart, are service centres for the local farming area. The continued importance of farming to these communities is evident in the popularity of the A & P show held each March at the Sheffield Showgrounds.

The Selwyn District is best known for it's diversified arable cropping. including seed potatoes. The District's climate is temperate with the warmest months being December, January and February, and the coldest in June, July and August.

The area provides a wealth of outdoor pursuits including world-class rock climbing at Castle Hill Rocks, the Craigieburn Forest Park for wonderful walks and mountain biking, and Arthur's Pass National Park with a host of day walks and overnight tramping.

The Waimakariri River is well known for its brown and rainbow trout as well as an annual run of salmon. This river with its braided riverbed is popular with jet boat enthusiasts while the upper river and gorge provide exciting canoeing and white water rafting. Other local tourist spots include Lake Coleridge and the Rakaia River.
