Sheffield is about 40 minutes west of Christchurch on the edge of the Canterbury Plains. The township is located near the key traffic junction between State Highway 73 (the main road over the Southern Alps to the West Coast) and the Inland Scenic Route (State Highway 72) that runs north-south through Canterbury.
