Westport New Zealand

Westport's Adventure Hub: Cycles, Hunting, Fishing, Outdoors, Sports, Clothing, Leisure, Internet Cafe
This is a great business. It is easy to run, and a great income earner, with growing profits over the last five years since we took over in September 2003.
This business is called "Blowfisch" and it is very well established in the market place with a broad customer base within the local community and excellent tourist trade. This shop has been a bicycle shop for nearly 100 years.

Day to Day Management
General
One of the great assets of this business is its flexibility and that it is very easy to manage.
Over the years we have established effective management systems. These vary from small improvements such as a comprehensive product catalogue filing system, and internet banking to the introduction of " Bank Link" (an administration tool that reduces the time needed for a GST Return to one hour every two months).
The shop can be run by one person only, especially in winter. In the past I have run the business by myself with one full time bike mechanic/ shop assistant.
During the renovations my wife and I both worked full time in the shop plus the bike mechanic and later, when we were having our baby, we hired one additional full time staff and my wife and I stopped working in the shop altogether for nine months.
To keep up the status quo over the year about 3000 man hours are required.
At the moment the business is run by one full time staff and a part time bike mechanic.
Hours of Operation
Summer: up to 7 days per week possible (last year only normal opening hours)
Winter: normal business hours weekdays, Saturday until lunchtime, Sundays closed.

Reason for Selling
Like everything in life, circumstances change. I am an immigrant to NZ, having come from Germany in 2001. In my old life I was a Geologist, single, working in project management in large environmental hazard cleanups - too specialized for New Zealands labour market of 2001, especially since my English was still quite limited back then. I started my retailing carreer out of necessity, rather than out of passion.
Today I am married, we have a baby and our focus on life has completely changed. Priority one is not to get established in a foreign country any more, but to live life with maximum integrity and passion and commitment for what we are doing. The window for compromises has become quite narrow and it is time to move on.
The Sale, The Price, Negotiations, Support
The Sale will be conducted through our Real Estate Agent, Fiona McLeod from Harourts. Your inquiry through this web page will be directly forwarded to her.
The Price is negotiable, we would like to be out of here before our second baby arrives.
The systems that we have integrated will allow you to learn to run the business within a few weeks. We will be available for questions and you might want to employ one of our key staff members for a few weeks to help you to get started
About Westport
The northern West Coast of the South Island is one of the best hidden secrets of the country. Lush Rainforests, most of them protected as National Parks, DOC or Crown Land, very friendly people, plenty of space, affordable Real Estate http://www.westcoastproperty.co.nz/, great outdoors, great hunting and fishing and (and here comes the secret): plenty of sunshine. It is true it rains a lot. About 2.3 meters anually to be precise, but we also get a very high amount of sunshine hours, about 1840 per year. That's not so far off Auckland (2060) or Christchurch (2100) and even better than Palmerston North (1734) http://www.niwascience.co.nz/edu/resources/climate/sunshine/. This area is magic on a sunny day, when it rains, it rains hard, but it then often clears up and turns into a fine day.
Westport is traditionally a mining town. It has a population of around 5000 people in town and another 1000 in the area. It's founding prosperity lead to a remarkably good infrastructure. Westport has good sport facilities, a public pool, a very nice golf course in Carters Beach, four Primary Schools, a High School, a very interesting historical museum http://www.geocities.com/coaltownnz/ etc.
Westport has a thriving community that offer countless activities that are organized by an endless amount of clubs.
