Te Awamutu and the Waipa District
The Waipa District in south-central Waikato has around 40,000 people who are fairly evenly mixed between urban and rural. The main urban populations are centred in the towns of Te Awamutu, Cambridge, Pirongia and Kihikihi.
Te Awamutu is known as The Town of Roses. It is a friendly and pretty town with famous rose gardens. A mild climate with moderate annual rainfall ensures excellent growing conditions year round. The maximum temperature averages 13.5 degrees Celsius in July and 24.2 degrees Celsius in February.
Shopping in Te Awamutu is where old-fashioned service meets modern day products, and the town hosts a variety of cafés, bars and restaurants. Hamilton with its International Airport, big city shopping, University, Hospital and sports facilities is only 30 minutes away.
Nearby Pirongia Forest Park, Yarndley's Bush, Lake Ngaroto and Mount Kakepuku are favourite localities for outdoors enthusiasts. Forest Parks have walkways and tracts of heritage wetland. The west coast offers ideal conditions for fishing, windsurfing, hang-gliding and canoeing. Horseback riding and mountain biking are popular sports and rock climbers are just minutes away from prime spots.
A predator-free Ecological Island has been created on nearby Maungatautari Mountain to restore the native forest and to re-establish original bird species. This reserve is getting world-wide attention and is very popular with both locals and tourists.
