Kaikoura is a tourist destination with people of all ages looking for an exciting night out on the town. Much of the Strawberry Tree clientele comes from passing foot traffic, local motels, backpackers hostels, camping grounds, and groups from Kiwi Experience, Stray Travel, and Magic Bus tours. Others are tourists passing through and Christchurch residents having fun at Kaikoura. Leasehold premises The Strawberry Tree operates from leasehold premises at 21 West End in central Kaikoura. The premises comprise bar and services area (240 square meters) and an outdoor beer garden at the rear (80 square meters).

The building is of modern construction (concrete tilt walls, Zincalloy roof) but with wooden floors and wooden beams to give the premises a much older look. Much of the timber, windows and doors have been rescued from historic South Island buildings and river bridges that were being demolished. There is a well-equipped kitchen downstairs along with 5 customer toilets. The upstairs area serves as a photo gallery but it could be fitted out as an office, or as a nightclub. Scenic Kaikoura, about half way between Christchurch and Picton, is sheltered by a peninsular that juts out into the Pacific Ocean. The land behind Kaikoura sweeps up to the Kaikoura Mountain Range and provides magnificent vistas of sea and snow capped mountains.
