Chipmunks is a Franchise business that is structured around five broad areas - Pay for Play for children 11 years and under, Birthday Parties, Drop Off Service, OSCAR (Out of School Care and Recreation) programmes including After School Care and Holiday Programmes, and Café services for parents, care givers and the general public. Chipmunks Nelson is being sold because the owner has increased family commitments and wants to take a break. Over the last six years, she has built Chipmunks Nelson into a thriving playground and café. Early childhood education is not a requirement for running this business and although a lot of development has been done, there are still opportunities for you to put your stamp on this business and make it your own. Should you have early childhood education, there is potential for other major developments. Pay for Play indoor adventure playground Chipmunks has a regular clientele who come for the Pay for Play section of the business. Children pay admission and are supervised by their parents or an accompanying adult. Regular promotions are also undertaken through local schools and motels to promote the playground. The playground consists of various areas: - Under 3 area - with age appropriate equipment, including bouncers for children under 1 year.
- Under 5 Ride-on area – a number of exciting electric and pedal-push power ride-ons.
- The Climbing Structure – mainly for children 3 and over - that includes a ball pit, large climbing area, ‘house’ area, various slides, a flying fox and climbing tunnels. The large inflatable slide that descends from the floor above, is the most popular play area.
- Playstations – three Playstation 2 machines with new games have been recently installed and these are very popular with the children.
 Play area for under 3-year olds, Cafe at rear The playground is very busy on rainy days and, by working with the Cancer Society to promote Sun Safe, attendance has been increased on sunny days. Ever-popular birthday parties, theme parties and disco for children Chipmunks Nelson has built up a reputation for great parties for children and excellent service. The business has two party rooms (The Castle Room and The Dolphin Room) and can accommodate up to 8 parties a day. A minimum of 8 children is required for a party and the rooms can accommodate up to 22 (Castle Room) and 24 children (Dolphin Room). For smaller groups, Chipmunks offers Café Parties.  Popular birthday parties Two flat screen, wall mounted screens and two DVD players have been put up in the party rooms and the Chipmunks DVD introducing Chipmunks characters and singing Happy Birthday is played for each party. There are also sound systems in each party room. Chipmunks offers four standard Franchisee parties plus the very popular Fairy and Pirate theme parties. Revenue from the parties is supplemented by café sales to accompanying parents, friends and relatives. Discos The discos are for children between the ages of 8 and 11 and are held every third Friday from 7.00 pm to 10.00 pm (four discos every school term). Entry is $10.00 per child and about 90 children attend per disco. A regular DJ provides music and lights. Approved OSCAR provider for After School Care and Holiday Programmes Drop Off Service Parents can leave their children (aged 5 to 13 years) for up to three hours. The children are given a purple netball-type top to wear for easy identification. After School Care Chipmunks Nelson has built up a good relationship with 7 local schools and has a reputation for safe, reliable and high quality care. Children are collected by a staff member using the Chipmunks Van and others are collected by staff on foot. On arrival, they are given afternoon tea. The younger children with reading homework then go to the couches and read to staff and the other children go upstairs to the OSCAR room where their homework is supervised. The business has purchased new tables and chairs as well as four computers, a printer, scanner and encyclopedia software to assist the children with their homework. The business also has a photocopier. When their homework is complete, the children are free to play, under supervision, until they are fetched – up until 6pm. Chipmunks Nelson is WINZ approved for an OSCAR (Out of School Care and Recreation) subsidy. The business also received a grant from the Ministry of Social Services for both the After School and Holiday Programs ($31,300 in 2007). This is the forth year that the grant has been approved and the money has been used to supplement wages, purchase new equipment, purchase an 11 seater van, special outings and general administration costs. This grant can be applied for annually. Holiday Program Chipmunks offers a Holiday Program, primarily for parents of children on the After School Program but many other children attend this programme as well. Good administrative systems are in place for these programmes to run smoothly. Approximately 40 children attend the programme every day.  Bouncy castle provides hours of fun Activities such as crafts and baking are done in the OSCAR room and both of the party rooms. The business also uses a local church hall with additional large rooms and a large kitchen. The majority of Holiday Programme activities are away from the centre leaving the centre available for other customers. Chipmunks Café offer a variety of food and beverage options The Café seats over 100 patrons and contributes around 30% of the total business turnover. Regular customers include staff and students from the nearby Polytech and Fishing School, local business people, and others who just walk in from the street. Of all 13 franchises, Chipmunks Nelson has the highest number of walk-in customers for the café. The Café has been recently upgraded with: - a new double-station espresso machine. Chipmunks promotes coffee sales with its Coffee Card for walk in customers offers a Club Card for playground customers and has a reputation for really good coffees.
- an expanded menu that includes combos (decided by the franchisor) as well as a number of other menu items decided by franchisees individually. There are also freshly baked local items and healthy alternatives.

Leasehold premises Chipmunks operates from a central Nelson locality (1298 square metres) at 311 Hardy Street. The property includes a two storey building (614 square metres) with a Café seating area of 88 square metres. The building has concrete floors, concrete walls and an iron roof. The present lessees have made major changes to the playground and Café seating areas which included opening up a large section of the roof, putting in the large inflatable slide and developing two upstairs rooms.
