Twizel and the Mackenzie Basin
Twizel (permanent population about 1200) is the main service town for the Mackenzie Basin. The Mackenzie Basin averages more than 300 meters above sea level and includes Lakes Tekapo, Alexandrina, Pukaki, Ohau, Ruataniwha and Benmore.
Twizel is accessible from Christchurch through Burke's Pass, from Queenstown through the Lindis Pass and from the East Coast through the Waitaki Valley via the Otematata Saddle. The town enjoys a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, high summer temperatures and winter hoarfrosts. Nearby Lake Ruataniwha is an attractive recreation area offering camping, boating and fishing and Aorangi/ Mt. Cook is just 40 minutes away.
Twizel is probably best known for its endangered black stilt colony and the captive-breeding centre just 3 km from the town centre. Black Stilts nest on braided river beds and because of predators, there are only about 120 birds left. Twizel is also known for the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. The locations where the Entwash, White Mountains, Gondor and Pelennor were filmed are all near the town.
