Freehold Tavern Business For Sale
Moeraki, North Otago, New Zealand

Moeraki Tavern North Otago hospitality business private sale

Moeraki Tavern – happy haven

Waterfront location, tourist area, million dollar views

Moeraki is a charming fishing village built around a small, picturesque bay between Dunedin and Oamaru.

The bay is sheltered from the south by a headland that juts out into the South Pacific Ocean. It is the ideal base for the local fishing fleet and fishing charter boats.

The village of Moeraki at the head of the bay is a popular holiday destination. Dunedin is only 45 minutes away by good roads and Oamaru is just 20 minutes away. Many retirees also live here and the houses that line the warm north-facing slopes enjoy stupendous views of Moeraki Harbour and the coastline to the north. The northern coastline is world famous as the location for the unique Moeraki Boulders.

Moeraki Tavern is just across the road from the waterfront

The Moeraki Tavern is located right in the centre of the Village Dress Circle and enjoys incredible views of the bay and fishing port. The Tavern is just 50 metres from the main wharf, 60 metres from the boat launching ramp, and 80 metres from the swimming beach. This location with its panoramic views over everything is truly unique. There is no other land in Moeraki suitable for a Hotel, and the Resource Consent took three years to obtain at a cost of over $100,000.

Moeraki Village is booming with new subdivisions along the coastal fringe and new buildings everywhere. There is a busy Motor Camp 200 metres from the Tavern that is a popular stopping place for tourists travelling around the South Island by campervan. Motels, rental houses and holiday homes are all within 400 metres, along with a helipad. The Tavern is a popular meeting place for everyone.

Moeraki Tavern has come on to the market because the owners wish to retire from business life. It would ideally suit a new owner with a background in the hospitality industry who wants an established business that enjoys both a local and an international clientele.

There would be few freehold businesses in New Zealand that could boast a better location. With its harbour views and proximity to the waterfront, properties like the Moeraki Tavern only appreciate in value.

Moeraki Tavern is the newest hotel in North Otago

Moeraki Village

Moeraki means "sleepy sky" or "a place to sleep by day", a perfect description of this quaint and restful village. The village is built on a peninsula with panoramic views up and down the coast. The semi-circular bay is a haven for fishing boats that provide an abundance of fresh seafood.

Yellow Eyed penguins, the world’s rarest penguin, can be seen along the beach by the Moeraki Lighthouse. The Bay is also home to fur seals and the occasional dolphin and is a great place to sea kayak or jet ski. Fishing from the wharf is very popular with children.

Moeraki is a sportsman’s paradise. The sea off Moeraki is one of the last great strongholds of good fishing left in New Zealand. Four charter boats operate from the Port- one holds 20 people, two hold 15 people and the fourth one holds 10 people. There is good pig and deer hunting in the surrounding hills.

The Moeraki Boulders that are scattered along the beach north of Moeraki Village are a popular visitor attraction. The soft mudstone containing the boulders was raised from the sea bed around 15 million years ago and sea erosion of the cliff is exposing the erosion-resistant boulders. The Boulders are septerian concretions formed some 65 million years ago.
