Timaru

Timaru is a major port city on the East Coast of the South Island , about 160 kilometres south of Christchurch and about 200 kilometres north of Dunedin . Timaru is located on State Highway One, which links to State Highway 8, the main route unto the Mackenzie Basin, Fairlie, Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook, and Queenstown.

Timaru (population about 28,000) is the main commercial centre for prosperous South Canterbury. The central business district has many fine Edwardian buildings. Most are built of bluestone, the volcanic rock common to the area. The CBD is a people-friendly area with street trees, flower beds, paved areas and lots of public seating for residents to rest and admire the views of the Pacific Ocean and the Southern Alps.

Caroline Bay is a popular recreational area just to the north of Timaru Port. Holiday-makers have been coming to this sandy and safe beach for more than 100 years, particularly for the annual Christmas -New Year carnival and days of entertainment and fast and furious fairground rides.
