Regular maintenance has been undertaken to keep the studio looking new. Good quality fixtures and furnishings have been used throughout and these are well appreciated by guests. The master features an ensuite and a walk-in wardrobe.

The motel is currently operated by the single owner. A receptionist / assistant is employed for 40 hours a week. Four part time staff makes up the cleaning team. Staff have proved to be readily available.

About Franz Josef Glacier

The township of Franz Josef Glacier is located in the heart of South Westland. Over 90 businesses operate within the Glacier region. With many thousands of visitors a day passing through the township services for locals exceed what you would expect for a community of around 300 permanent residents.

Within walking distance of the motel there is a choice of eight restaurants, a great bookshop, community gym and squash courts, community library, medical centre, fuel station, postal shop and a well stocked supermarket with bakery. The community spirit is healthy with several community events occurring annually. The region also offers great salmon and trout fishing, deer and shammy hunting, hours of sneaker friendly walking tracks, and a play group and a primary school in the township. A golf course is just 20 minutes up the road at Whataroa.

Visitors have been making the journey to the glaciers for decades now. Glacier Country is a developing destination on the main tourist trail between Queenstown and Greymouth where the world famous Tranz Alpine train departs for Christchurch.

Visitor numbers have increased greatly over the past five years and this has driven private development investment in the township. The Hukawai Glacier Centre, which is adjacent to the motel, is the home to the southern hemispheres only indoor ice climbing wall and a great information walk. These activities are much appreciated on rainy days by visitors. Several investors, including Ngâi Tahu, are presently working on the development of a network of hot pools. This development, which is just 2 doors down Cron Street from the motel, includes several public and private pools with the ability to cater for hundreds of visitors per day.

An income stream that has not been fully capitalised on in this business is that of selling activities. Nearly all activities and all flights within the region offer a commission incentive to agents. When guests chose a heli hike at $360 pp for the amount of time needed to sell this activity the return is great!
