Invercargill and Southland

Invercargill has a unique Scottish heritage with numerous Victorian buildings, wide boulevards, and the distinctive rolled “R” of the Southland drawl. The city has 1200 hectares of gracious parklands and gardens earning it the reputation as Southland's garden city. Invercargill is also famous as the home of Burt Munro who, in 1967, broke the world land speed record for a motorcycle under 1000 cc.

Invercargill welcomes all tourists with an excellent standard of service and southern hospitality. The Southland Museum and Art Gallery is a ‘must visit’ to see tuatara, the only living species from the Jurassic Age. Other attractions include Splash Palace, Stadium Southland, Invercargill Heritage Trail, the Southern Institute of Technology, and much more.

Dairying is a major industry in Southland. Fonterra operates one of the world's largest dairy factories at Edendale, 35 km from Invercargill. Edendale currently employs over 400 people and is about to get even bigger with the construction of a new milk powder plant.

Beautiful Oreti Beach is a 10 minutes drive and Omaui is 20 minutes away. Bluff, New Zealand's oldest European town that was settled in 1824, is 25 minutes away. Bluff is famous for one of New Zealand's most renowned delicacies, the Bluff Oyster.
