Beautiful Akaroa Harbour and the picturesque township of Akaroa
Akaroa is steeped in history. It is the site of the only settlement by the French in New Zealand and several streets have French names. They came because of the safe harbour (actually the remnant crater of an ancient volcano) but colonisation was difficult because of the British and the steep and arid landscape.
Today, Akaroa is a popular resort town with colonial buildings, cafes, restaurants, and boutique shopping. The scenic drive from Christchurch (82 km) provides breath-taking views over the harbour and bays. A steady stream of tourists come all through the year but, in summer, Akaroa reaches bursting point with a temporary population that can exceed 7,000 people.
Akaroa Waterfront Motels has come on to the market as a going concern business. This spacious 24 unit complex is presented in immaculate condition and is returning a net profit of 34%. It occupies arguably the best site in Akaroa with immediate harbour access and awesome water views. If you have a background in the hospitality industry and are looking for a busy motel, seriously consider what Akaroa Waterfront Motels has to offer.

Historic Akaroa and big-city Christchurch
Akaroa is an historic French and British settlement on the shores of Akaroa Harbour, the sunken crater of one of the ancient volcanos that created Banks Peninsular.
Akaroa village is famous for its colonial architecture, craft stores, restaurants and cafés. It is also famous for its harbour cruises and stunning marine life including its population of Hectors Dolphins. The Hectors Dolphin is the world's smallest and rarest dolphin. There are commercial operators for everyone including wildlife cruises, sailing, swimming with the dolphins, boat hire and sea kayaking. Other adventures include farm visits and tours to seal and penguin colonies.
The Banks Peninsula Track (4 days, 4 bays) is New Zealand's original private walking track. This self guided walk starts in Akaroa, climbs up and over the crater rim surrounding Akaroa Harbour and then descends through native forest to the Pacific Coast. It follows the dramatic coastline, via cliff tops, rocky bays and sandy beaches back to Akaroa. Small daily numbers, delightful accommodation, great facilities, and spectacular views make this walk one of the most enjoyable in New Zealand.
Other guided walks take visitors through historic Akaroa with its colonial architecture, with a morning or afternoon tea stops at a local cafe or historic homes.
Christchurch is the international gateway to the South Island. Tourists staying in the city take day tours to Akaroa and then come back for longer stays. Many others come to Akaroa as the grand finale to their New Zealand holiday. Once they have seen the beauty and tranquility of Akaroa they stay on for extra nights to wind-down before flying out from Christchurch.
