Hokitika and Westland

Hokitika is a small town with about 3,500 residents. It is a perfect place for a quiet break or a fun holiday with lots of adventures. Mount Cook can be seen from the beach and there are always glorious sunsets to admire.

Hokitika is at the centre of an area known for rainforests and wetlands and when it rains, it rains. However, the town also has about the same sunshine hours as Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch.

Over 18,000 visitors come to Hokitika in early March of each year for the Hokitika Wildfoods Festival with exotic food and great entertainment. Hokitika is the gateway to the South Westland World Heritage National Park that includes Aoraki/Mount Cook, Westland, Fiordland and Mount Aspiring National Parks. There is much to see and do in this unspoiled natural environment that includes dramatic West Coast beaches, rugged cliff tops, ancient lakes and forests, spectacular glaciers and the dramatic backdrop of a mountain chain dividing east from west.

For the adventure seeker there is white water rafting, kayaking, heli-skiing, and scenic flights. The region is also internationally renowned for talented musicians and artisans. Arts, crafts, greenstone, glassblowing, water world, and the kiwi house at the Eco Centre have all help put Hokitika on the map.
