Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty
Tauranga is a very popular retirement and tourism destination. It features many natural attractions and great scenery.
Tauranga city is located at the southern end of Tauranga Harbour in the western Bay of Plenty. Due to its sheltered position on the east coast, Tauranga enjoys a mild climate year-round and the city is a popular retirement destination. During the summer months the population swells as holidaymakers descend on the city and on nearby Mt Maunganui.
Much of the countryside surrounding Tauranga is horticultural land, used to grow a wide range of fresh produce for both domestic consumption and export. The area is particularly well known for growing kiwifruit, avocados, citrus, and sub-tropical fruits. Recently, several boutique vineyards and wineries have been established.
The Port of Tauranga is New Zealand's largest export port, especially for timber and horticultural produce. It is a regular stop-off for both container ships and luxury cruise liners.
The region’s legendary beaches, particularly at Mt Maunganui, attract swimmers, surfers, kayakers, and kite-surfers throughout the year. Other popular outdoor activities include golf, tramping (hiking), mountain biking, fishing, diving, and white water rafting. The Montana Jazz Festival takes place in Tauranga every Easter, with dozens of live acts, good food and excellent wine.
