Day to day management

Staff

Originally run as a family business with some day-time reception relief, we now live off site with Night Managers residing in the flat.

At present we have a receptionist who works 2 days (usually Monday and Tuesday) from 9.15am - 5.15pm. She is also able to manage the motel for up to 5 days if we go away.

In the summer we have 6 cleaners on every day who work from 9.30 am - 2pm approximately. These are a combination of permanent part-time workers and overseas workers on working holiday visas, and some casual staff. We provide accommodation for the overseas workers in a rented cottage, or occasionally in the Budget Accommodation.

During May and June we have 3-4 cleaners and then increase again as the ski season starts in July.

We have very little difficulty getting staff, by advertising on a seasonal work website and taking on overseas workers for 3 months. In that way we can plan to have less staff in the off season.

Hours of Operation

We are open all year.

Our office hours are 7am - 9pm.

Stock

2 weeks normal operating stock is included in the asking price.

About Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo is charming high country town, population about 350, situated on State Highway 8 , the halfway point between Christchurch and Queenstown, 3 hours from both. It is a natural stopping place for tourists who have arrived at Christchurch and are travelling on to Queenstown.

It is 710 metres above sea level and enjoys many days of sunshine, both in the summer and winter.Summer temperatures are pleasant, with low humidity, whilst the winter brings crisp, cold frosty days, snow on the mountains and occasionally in the village. Autumn colours are glorious.

The most famous landmark of Lake Tekapo is the picturesque Church of the Good Shepherd, a popular venue for weddings.

Lake Tekapo is a wonderful spot for the outdoor enthusiast - there is good fishing in the lake or hydro canals, golf, mountain biking ,hunting, walking, ice skating from May to October, curling, skiing from July to September and for those with a boat, a chance to explore the lake or water ski. Hardy types even swim in the lake! We are one and a quarter hours' drive from Mt Cook village, with more opportunities for outdoor activities.

There is a world renowned Observatory situated very close to the town on Mt John and this brings a lot of tourists who come to experience the night sky.

Another popular feature is the Alpine Springs and Spa, in the same complex as the outdoor ice skating rink.

Lake Tekapo is also a service centre for the large sheep stations situated around the lake and in this part of the Mackenzie Basin. There is a thriving Primary School and for secondary schooling a bus takes children to Fairlie, half an hour away, to Mackenzie College. A well-stocked Four Square Supermarket is situated in the village centre, plus a petrol station, a car mechanic and a post office. There is a sole charge policeman, volunteer fire brigade and ambulance in the town. Timaru on the coast is the main centre and is one and a quarter hours' drive from Lake Tekapo.

There is good cell-phone and broadband coverage in the town.
