The business retails principally menswear (such as socks, underwear, trousers, belts and braces, shorts, shirts, ties, knitwear, tops, jackets, headwear), schoolwear and a little women’s clothing (sports branded apparel). Cooneys also sells a wide selection of footwear for women, men, and children (dress, casual, sporting).

Cooneys Clothing & Footwear specialises in the mid to upper end of the clothing and footwear market. The business has this slice of the market to itself. Alexandra boasts “The Warehouse” and “Hallensteins” but both of these potential competitors only cater for the lower to middle end of the market. 

Customers come from Alexandra and from the rural hinterland of Queenstown, Wakatipu, Wanaka, Cromwell, Ranfurly, and Roxburgh. Customers come to the shop mainly as foot traffic, but Cooneys also has mail and phone customers (especially from outside of Alexandra itself).

In addition, significant trade comes from holiday-makers. Holiday shoppers are primarily New Zealanders from the Otago and Southland regions but there are growing numbers of Free Independent Travellers from overseas.

Cooneys Clothing & Footwear is an established business with a steady customer base that spans all of Central Otago. It would ideally suit a husband and wife partnership with part-time staffing support.

Cooneys Clothing & Footwear leases a retail shop on the main street in Alexandra. The shop leasehold (4 x 4 x 4 x 4 with second term expiring 3/12/03) has two further rights of renewal (each of four years).

Staff:
Cooneys Clothing & Footwear is operated by the two owners (full-time) plus five part-time staff, rostered mainly for weekends and occasional weekday work.

Stock at Valuation will comprise mainly retail lines and will likely to be in the range of $225,000 - $250,000 dependent upon time (season) of year.

Alexandra is built at the confluence of the Clutha and  Manuherikia Rivers and is surrounded alluvial agricultural land and rugged hillsides. The whole area is famous for its schist rock outcrops and thyme-strewn countryside.

The river flats around Alexandra contain alluvial gold. Evidence is everywhere of past gold dredging, old  huts and gold stampers.

Today, Alexandra's economy is based on agriculture and horticulture. Local farms produce some of the world's finest merino wool. There are extensive stone fruit orchards and vineyards. Some of these produce top New Zealand wines with international recognition. 

Activities and attractions include horseback riding, mountain biking, some of the country's best fishing, wild mountain flowers arts, crafts, fine regional food, jet boating, gold panning, ice skating, golf, and some of the best scenery you can get anywhere.

Alexandra is a comfortable distance from major ski-fields (at Queenstown and at Wanaka) - the town is renown for its hot summers and cold dry winters.
